Quinnipiac 4, Merrimack 3 – F/OT

2008 December 29
by Mike McMahon

The Warriors fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats 4-3 in overtime on Monday afternoon in the first round of the Toyota UConn Holiday Classic .

Merrimack held a 2-0 lead in the second period. Quinnipiac never held the lead in this game, not going ahead until the the goal in OT.

Fraser Allan, Joe Cucci and Jeff Velleca score for the Warriors, who will battle either UConn or Air Force on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

This has to be a terrible disapointment for the Warriors.

Merrimack was dominating the Bobcats early, but gave them some easy goals. The puck was misplayed off the back boards that resulted in the Bobcats’ first goal. The third goal came off a terrible turnover at the blueline that allowed David Marshall to go in alone on Andrew Braihtwaite.

It was one of those cases where Quinnipiac didn’t beat Merrimack, the Warriors beat themselves with some costly mistakes. But, giving credit where its due, the Bobcats did bury the chances the Warriors gave them.

    Hey Mike,

Are the wheels starting to fall off the MC bandwagon…or is this loss not a big deal? Because there has not been much to cheer about in the past month…

    Hey Mike,

I made the trek to UConn yesterday and all I can say is Ugh….

Coming of a long layoff I was expecting play to be a bit sluggish – and It was. MC had their legs and momentum in the 1st period and it reflected in the 2-0 score. The 2nd period they were beat to the puck and let QU back in the game – the D was out of sync and Braith has definitely played better games. In the 3rd period they ran out of gas and couldn’t put together anything they were pushing and paying the price for being out of position. The goals they let in were the type that deflate you – we need to get past that. It was a positive sign when Velleca scored (a VERY nice goal) and MC played good enough to win – and they need to win these games. We should be past the point where we give games away.

This team has too much talent to have loses like this. Lets hope they learn from this and start putting together some wins in the 2nd half.

    Go Warriors..
